This week, Auburn Rotary welcomed Cathy Thompson and William Zander for an inspiring update on the important work of Music4Life, an education-focused nonprofit helping remove financial barriers that prevent students from participating in school music programs.

Music4Life provides donated and repaired musical instruments at no charge to participating public school districts and programs for use by students in need. The organization’s mission is simple but powerful: to make sure family income does not stand in the way of a student’s opportunity to experience the lifelong benefits of music education.

The program works by collecting “lovingly used” musical instruments from individuals who no longer need them, arranging for repairs when necessary, and placing those instruments back into the hands of students through local school programs. Music4Life also accepts financial contributions to help cover the cost of instrument repairs and purchases, ensuring that students receive instruments that are ready to play.

To date, Music4Life has distributed more than 6,500 instruments, helping thousands of students participate more fully in school music programs. Today, June 10, 2026, the program was also delivering five additional instruments to the Auburn School District for student use during the next school year.

For many families, the cost of purchasing or renting an instrument can be a significant barrier. Music4Life notes that quality beginner instruments can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, making access difficult for students whose families are already facing financial challenges.

By supporting instrumental music education, Music4Life helps students build confidence, develop discipline, experience the joy of making music alongside their peers, and gain access to opportunities that can enrich their education for years to come.

Auburn Rotary thanks Cathy Thompson and William Zander for sharing Music4Life’s current efforts, local impact, and the many ways community members can help support students through instrument donations, repair funding, and advocacy for music education.
