Featured Speaker – Cheryl Rakes, Executive Director, Downtown Auburn Cooperative
Cheryl has lived in Auburn 61 years. She came to Auburn when she was 5 and her Dad took a position with the Auburn Fire Department. He later went on to be promoted to Captain and retired in 1980. Cheryl’s early education was in the Auburn School District. She attended Dick Scobee Elementary, Terminal Park Elementary, Washington Elementary, West Auburn Elementary, Cascade Middle School, and finally Auburn High School, which she graduated in 1973.
Cheyrl graduated from Mr. Lee’s Beauty School in 1973. She went on to take classes at Green River Community College. In 1980 she went to business at Knapp College of Business in Auburn and graduated. After graduation she went to work at H.D. Fowler in Pacific as a “Key Office Person”, she stayed there for 4 years than went to work at a sister company of Multifoods called VSA ( Vendor Supply of America) as a Sales Coordinator and managed the Sales Office and stayed with the Company until they closed in Washington State. She took some time off and went back to school at Bryman College in Renton and got my Medical Assistant degree. She went to work for St Joseph in Tacoma and work there until she retired in 2008.
Cheryl got involved with the Downtown Auburn Cooperative at the end of 2019 because her daughter owns Rail Hop’n Brewery in Auburn. She became president in 2020 and served that roll until the end of 2021. She is now the Executive Director started in January of 2022.
Auburn is her passion and her roots have been here a long time. In my free time she enjoys spending time with her husband Shawn, 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She enjoys sewing, crocheting.
